martial arts

Inspired by video games and action movies at the age of 18, I began training in the martial arts.

I drifted in and out of various martial arts systems, training briefly before losing interest and moving on. I didn’t realise it at the time, but I was bitten by a bug. Even though I couldn’t settle in any particular system, I was consistently drawn back to martial arts. It had begun to influence my life and shape my character without me realising it.

When we moved to Perth from the UK in 2006, I made a conscious decision to start back up in my training, and really commit. I knew without doubt, this time I would get a black belt, however I had no idea at the time I would have continued to where I am today. I discovered a great freestyle system to train in, but more importantly a professional club with passionate, dynamic and intelligent instructors at Life, formerly known as WAIMA. This was to be my home from home for the next 12 years.

Being a full-time professional martial arts instructor is not a glamorous or easy job. All the instructors at Life. work tirelessly out in front and behind the scenes to ensure the continuing success of our students. We pride ourselves on training hard in all disciplines and I wouldn’t make any of my students do anything I’m not prepared to do myself.

It’s hard not to love what I do…

Why wouldn’t I love doing something that keeps my physically fit and mentally strong? Why wouldn’t I love something that empowers me to be able to look after my family, my friends and myself? Why wouldn’t I love something that allows me to continually set and achieve goals, giving me constant improvement in my life?

Training in martial arts has given me all these gifts, and as a teacher, a Sensei, the most special gift of all is the ability to pass these gifts on to others. I look forward to a life-long journey in martial arts, and the day I stop growing is the day I die.
