Consistency Over Intensity

We talk about setting goals or new year’s resolutions a lot at the end of the year, anda lot of the New Year’s resolutions that were set will have already been forgotten or given up on. The initial boost of energy and motivation slowly petersand the reality of making life changes hits us. So, what can you do differently to make your vision of the future a reality?

If you started the year with a bang and found you ran out of that initial momentum, you are not alone in falling into an intensity trap.Putting all your focus and energy into achieving your goal is not sustainable for most people. On the other hand, goal setting can be exciting,creating this new vision of your future but then comes the reality of making it happen, it can seem like a mountain toobig to climb.

How can you combat this? It’s simple but not easy. Focusing on consistency over intensity is the key. By making small manageable shifts and staying consistent, you can start to change the way you do things and the way you see yourself.

Want to be a person who runs every day? Start by running to the end of the block and back prove to yourself that you can show up for yourself before adding distance.

Want to be a person who saves? Start by saving a dollar, once you have the habit set increase the amount over time.

Want to be a black belt?Turn up to training. Even if you just watch you are creating a habit of discipline and commitment.

There is great value in starting small and building up over time.Here are some extra tips to get you started.

Get clear on what you want to achieve

Whether you like writing out goals for what you want to achieve, getting clear is an important step. A vision board can be a great alternative to written goalsif they don’t tend to work for you. Here are a couple of points to help you get clear and focused on what you want to achieve.

  1. State it in the positive.What do you want?
  2. Be specific with the outcome. What will you see, hear, feel and do when you have it?
  3. Write it as if it is real now, this is important!
  4. Check if it is congruent and supports all other areas of your life.

Look at your systems

One of the keys to long-term success is to make changes to your systems. The way you do things.Making changes here is about starting small and being consistent, if you slip and fall into an old habit that is ok just get back on track as soon as you can.

Small tweaks make a big difference over time.

Look at your choices

Start asking yourself what decision someone who already has what you want would make, and start making that choice yourself. If you don’t know what choice they would make, try and find someone who you can use as a mentor or inspiration.

Last tip to help you on the way – start NOW. Don’t wait until Monday or next week or next month. Start changing the way that you do life now and start getting the results that you want.
